Texas is a homestead law state. Filing a Homestead Exemption with the county appraiser may allow you to receive any applicable discounts with the local taxing authorities. If you are the owner of the property as of January 1, and it is your principal residence, you may be eligible for this exemption. You only have to file the exemption once.
NOTE: You may receive correspondence from various companies requesting money from you to file a Homestead exemption on your behalf. There is no cost to apply for a Homestead Exemption.
If you meet the eligibility requirements and you have never filed for a Homestead Exemption, complete the form you can obtain from the county appraisal district where the property is located. The form must be filed after January 1st and before the end of April.
